Vehicle at service centre having a brake disc service.

Your car’s brake system is arguably one of the most important safety features of the vehicle. For your safety and those of your passengers, you need to make sure they’re always working to full effect. If you start seeing signs that your brakes have worn, or are not working effectively, it’s critical that you have them checked as soon as possible.

What are the warning signs that something is wrong with your brakes?

Here are some of the signs you need to look out for which will indicate that your car brakes need to be looked at:

  • The brakes squeal or screech when braking
  • The car pulls to the left or right when you brake
  • When you brake, the brake pedal sits low, and the braking feels soft, hard or even spongy.
  • The car loses grip when you brake
  • The steering wheel shudders when you brake
  • It takes longer for the car to stop than normal

Why do brakes fail?

When you step on the brake pedal, brake fluid engages various mechanisms in the car that push your car’s brake pads onto the disc rotor, which causes the car to stop. The brake pad is mounted on the brake calliper, which is responsible for applying and releasing the brake pads to and from the rotor.

The second important mechanism responsible for your braking action, is the disc rotor, which is the circular metal plate on your car’s wheels. If this disc is smooth, the braking action of your car will normally be working as needed.

Both of these parts are subject to wear and tear, and after thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of braking actions, the rotor can become uneven, and the callipers will wear away over time. Once this happens, you’ll notice something wrong with your braking, including one or more of the signs above.

If you are experiencing any of these signs that suggest your brake system is failing, we urge you not to wait until it’s too late. If you do, there could be catastrophic consequences.
