The oil in your car’s engine is one of the key factors that will keep your vehicle running smoothly and offers the longest service life possible. It reduces wear between metal components and disperses heat while assisting in lubricating the engine's internal moving components, such as the pistons and cylinders.

Typically, most drivers check their engine oil with a dipstick, however, if you’re unsure of what you’re doing the best thing to do is getting help from a professional, such as Midas Narre Warren. We offer an Essential Service for a basic vehicle inspection where we check whether or not your engine oil needs to be replaced.

What is engine oil?

Simply put, engine oil is a substance used for the lubrication of internal combustion engines. It is one of the most important components for your engine’s performance and longevity. In general, engine oil has two fundamental components: additives and base oils.

Base oils

The base oils make up the largest portion of the engine oil. They are in charge of lubricating the internal moving parts of the engine, absorbing the heat and sealing the piston rings. A piston ring is an element of the engine that prevents combustion gases from entering the oil sump (the metal dish that holds the engine oil when the car is not moving).

Additives

The additives, on the other hand, refer to chemical compounds that improve the lubricant performance of base oil. Generally, base engine oils are very poor lubricants, and that’s why oil formulators add additives to them to produce a more stable lubricant in terms of viscosity. Additives can modify base oils’ resistance to a variety of temperatures and corrosion, extending the life of the engine and improving fuel economy.

Why do engines need oil?

An engine oil's primary purpose is to prevent metal-on-metal contact. The metal parts of the engine expand when working, which manufacturers consider when designing the tight tolerances between them. If these metal components are in contact with each other, the friction will create excessive heat and more expansion. As a consequence of metal to metal contact, you could be up for expensive repairs.

That’s why your car’s engine needs oil. The oil creates a thin film between the moving metal parts of the engine, preventing direct contact with each other. Engine oil is a crucial component for the survival of your engine, even on a short drive.

Why does the oil need changing?

Engine oil should be changed regularly to prevent the accumulation of extra dirt in your engine caused by use. Also, the engine oil won’t meet the manufacturer’s performance specifications as it becomes less effective over time. This happens because, after many heat cycles, the engine oil additives can break down and decompose, reducing their effectiveness.

When should you get your oil changed?

Oil check light dashboard

Generally, stick to your manufacturer’s recommended oil change intervals as mentioned in your owner’s manual. Ensure that the oil in your vehicle meets or exceeds the standards required for your vehicle.

Over many heat cycles and through normal use, your oil becomes less effective at lubrication.

Aside from the usual oil change intervals, there are signs that your engine oil could be running low:

  • The oil check light on your dashboard is illuminated
  • Weird noises/knocks from your engine
  • Exhaust smoke. Although it might be invisible, it will have a slight smell to it
  • Burning oil smell inside of your car
  • There are oil stains where you normally park your vehicle.
