What is a roadworthy inspection?

A roadworthy inspection is a comprehensive assessment of a vehicle’s safety and roadworthiness. It is required in Victoria before a vehicle can be registered or re-registered.

Many parts of Australia require periodic inspections to ensure that vehicles remain in a safe and roadworthy condition. Generally, these schemes lower road tolls by removing poorly maintained, damaged and old vehicles from our roads.

It’s important to note that roadworthy inspection schemes aren’t targeting owners of older and classic vehicles, as long as they’re properly maintained.

When do I need a roadworthy?

A roadworthy is required whenever a vehicle's sold or if it's being re-registered after registration has lapsed.

Occasionally, a roadworthy inspection is required to clear some defect notices, such as for a cracked windscreen or bald tyres.

What is checked in a roadworthy test?

Essentially, everything to do with safety. A roadworthy check covers items like

  • Tyres and wheels
  • Steering and suspension
  • Brakes
  • Lights and reflectors
  • Windscreen, windows and mirrors
  • Seats and seatbelts
  • Body and chassis
  • Fuel system
  • Exhaust system

Because the purpose of a roadworthy inspection is to ensure that key vehicle components are functioning and that the vehicle is safe to us, some items are not checked.

Non critical functions such as faulty air conditioning, rear windscreen wipers or interior lighting are not subject to assessment. A successful roadworthy inspection does not indicate how mechanically sound and reliable a vehicle is.

What happens if I fail a roady?

Failing an inspection isn’t the end of the world, and usually, if it’s a really quick fix, we can sort it out on-the-spot.

If a vehicle fails a roadworthy inspection, you have 14 days to have the necessary repairs completed before the vehicle can be re-inspected free-of-charge at the same inspection station.

Some larger repairs and complications that require more than 14 days to resolve will require paying for a second inspection.
